Is Your Exhaust System Ready for Spring? Here’s What to Listen For

Exhaust problems have a way of sneaking up on you. You get used to a new sound gradually, or you only hear it at certain speeds, or it starts out mild enough that it’s easy to dismiss. Spring is a good time to pay attention — because what’s manageable now can become a real issue once summer heat and added highway miles enter the picture.

Here are the signs your exhaust system is trying to get your attention:

A rumbling or roaring noise that’s gotten louder over time. This is one of the most common indicators of a failing muffler or a hole somewhere in the exhaust pipe. It tends to get worse at acceleration and is hard to ignore once it progresses.

A hissing or tapping sound, especially at startup or acceleration. This often points to an exhaust manifold leak — where exhaust gases are escaping before they reach the muffler. Left unaddressed, manifold leaks can damage nearby components and allow exhaust fumes to enter the cabin.

A sulfur or rotten egg smell. This can indicate a problem with the catalytic converter, which is one of the more expensive components in the exhaust system — and one worth addressing early before it causes downstream issues.

Reduced fuel efficiency. A compromised exhaust system affects backpressure, which affects how efficiently your engine runs. If your mpg has dropped without explanation, exhaust could be part of the story.
