Murfreesboro goes from comfortable spring temps to full-on Tennessee summer heat faster than anyone wants to admit. By May, we’re regularly seeing 80-degree days. By June, 90s are the norm. Your engine’s cooling system is what stands between that heat and a very expensive repair — and spring is the best time to make sure it’s ready.
The cooling system circulates coolant through the engine to absorb heat, then releases it through the radiator. When the system is working right, you never think about it. When it’s not, your temperature gauge creeps up and eventually you’re on the side of the road with steam coming from under the hood.
What can go wrong — and what to check this spring:
Low or old coolant. Coolant degrades over time and loses its protective and heat-transfer properties. If it looks brown or murky instead of its original green or orange, it needs to be flushed and replaced. Low coolant level can indicate a slow leak worth finding before it becomes a big one.
Hoses. Radiator and heater hoses should be firm, not soft or spongy. Cracks, swelling, or soft spots mean the hose is near the end of its life. A burst hose on a hot day will leave you stranded quickly.
Radiator. Bugs, road debris, and corrosion can reduce the radiator’s ability to release heat. A visual inspection can catch obvious issues.
Thermostat. A stuck thermostat is a common and inexpensive cause of overheating that’s often overlooked.
