Muffler Repair and Replacement

Your muffler has a simple job: make the exhaust coming out of your vehicle a lot quieter.

You probably don’t think about it until it stops doing that job.

A muffler can rust, develop a hole, break internally or separate from the pipe around it. When that happens, the first sign is usually sound. You may also notice the exhaust hanging lower than it used to, a rattle from underneath the car or rust around the muffler and nearby pipe.

Why did my car suddenly get louder?

Sometimes the muffler itself has failed.

Other times, the problem is actually a pipe, connection or hanger near the muffler.

That’s why hearing a loud exhaust doesn’t automatically mean you need a new muffler. We want to see what’s actually damaged first.

If a connection has broken or a section of pipe has rusted through, repairing that section may solve the problem without replacing parts that are still perfectly usable.

Can a muffler be repaired?

Sometimes.

A small problem around the pipe or connection may be repairable. A muffler that has rusted badly or fallen apart inside usually makes more sense to replace.

The important part is knowing the difference. A repair that makes sense on solid pipe may not make sense when the muffler itself is badly rusted or coming apart inside.

Stones River does exhaust fabrication in-house, so we’re not limited to ordering a complete exhaust assembly and replacing everything as one piece. We can cut, bend and weld pipe to fit the vehicle when that’s the better repair.

What if I don’t want it quiet?

That’s a different conversation, and one we’re happy to have.

Some customers want a factory-style replacement that makes the vehicle quiet again. Others want something deeper or more noticeable.

We also install and build custom exhaust systems, so if you’re replacing a muffler and have been thinking about changing the way your car or truck sounds, tell us before we start.

There are plenty of ways to make an exhaust louder. The trick is making it sound good without leaving you with an annoying hum every time you drive down I-24.

Dallas knows exhaust

Dallas Beard handles much of the exhaust work at Stones River.

He’s been doing it for decades, and his business partner Thomas calls him the “exhaust whisperer” because Dallas can often recognize an exhaust problem just by hearing it.

Whether you need a quiet replacement muffler or want to talk through a custom setup, we’ll look at what you have and explain your options before anything gets cut.
